"United. Inclusive. Strong." What better way to say in a few words what ETFO and its 83,000 members have aspired to be since the Federation's inception in 1998!
As the largest union of teachers and education professionals in the country, ETFO has fought for and won improved wages and better working and learning conditions. It has shaped today’s profession by reaffirming our democratic bargaining rights, enshrining teachers’ rights to use professional judgement and making equity and social justice a priority.
With its members, ETFO has the power to positively impact publicly-funded public education in Ontario. With its Building Better Schools, ETFO continues to build Ontarians’ support for a high quality public education system.
Learn more about ETFO’s history and its work over 20 years to build a better and more equitable future for members, students and families.
It’s Elementary: A brief history of Ontario’s public elementary teachers and their federations is a comprehensive history of ETFO and its predecessor organizations. At this time, only the first chapter is available dealing with 2009 to 2018. The rest of the book, dealing with the period up to 2008, is a legacy publication and we are working on an AODA-accessible version of this section. Once that is complete we will release the full book online.
Hear from ETFO’s presidents, general secretaries and members about the Federation’s key moments and what ETFO means to them in our upcoming video ETFO: Celebrating Our First 20.
