Statement from ETFO President Sam Hammond: “Students, teachers need mass support to change U.S. gun laws”

February 26, 2018
“The Elementary Teachers’ Federation of Ontario (ETFO) supports the call from American youth in the battle to change gun laws in the United States (US) and eradicate shootings in schools.
“Their protests and the folly of political leaders who demand that American teachers be armed have sparked a teacher campaign #armmewith that names what they really need to better support students- not guns but more books, art and music programs, nurses, school counsellors and smaller class sizes.
“The voices of students have also convinced corporate America to begin dropping their affiliations with the National Rifle Association (NRA), whose powerful lobby has allowed gun violence to take the lives of so many. Delta Airlines, United Airlines, Hertz, Enterprise and Budget car rental companies, Allied Van Lines, Met Life Insurance and Symantec have done the responsible thing and severed ties with the NRA. ETFO is calling on all corporations to end their ties to the NRA.
“We can support our fellow American educators through the American Teachers’ Federation ( and National Education Union ( as they fight against U.S. gun laws.
“And we can support young American students like Emma Gonzalez (@Emma4Change) as she helps organize a Washington “March for Our Lives” on March 24.”
