On behalf of the 83,000 members of the Elementary Teachers’ Federation of Ontario, I want to express our deep condolences to the Nova Scotia Teachers Union regarding the tragic death of member Lisa McCully.
Our hearts go out to Lisa’s family, NSTU member Dean Stevenson, partner of slain Constable Heidi Stevenson, as well as to the families of the many Nova Scotians who died in this senseless tragedy.
The bonds we all share as educators come from a deep understanding and appreciation of the passion and expertise that members like Lisa have brought to the teaching profession. Her care and dedication to her grades 3 and 4 students of Debert Elementary Public School will be sorely missed as will her love for her two children and family members.
Whether on the front lines of education or the front lines of policing, Lisa McCully and Constable Stevenson dedicated their lives to helping people. As unionists, we know that there is no higher calling than public service.
It will take time for NSTU members and all people in Nova Scotia to process the tragedy that has taken place in your province. Please know that ETFO members and people across this country stand with you in this time of deep tragedy. From our homes, we send to you the message #NovaScotiaStrong in solidarity.
