On May 9, 2018—the first day of the provincial election campaign—ETFO members, provincial leaders and local leaders rallied at the Ministry of Education Mowat Block in Toronto to send a message that change is needed on June 7th to Build Better Schools in this province.
In a rousing speech, ETFO President Sam Hammond declared that "It's Time!" Time to fix the province's broken education Funding Formula. Time to cap class sizes in grades 4 to 8 and in Kindergarten. Time to deal with the increasing incidents of classroom violence that are making students' classrooms and teachers' workplaces unsafe. Time to deal with the backlog of repair and infrastructure issues in Ontario's schools. And finally, time to eliminate EQAO testing and direct those funds to the classroom.
Hammond was joined on the Mowat Block steps by a number of other groups and local activists. Andy Lomnicki and Jennifer Brown from ETT spoke of the local's efforts to secure over 7,000 members' signatures on a petition demanding that the Funding Formula be fixed. Rally participants also heard from Krista Wylie, Fix Our Schools Co-Founder; Deena Ladd from the Workers' Action Centre; and OTF President Chris Cowley.
