ETFO President Sam Hammond and Deputy General Secretary Jerry DeQuetteville at the legislature, February 25, 2019

In February 2019, ETFO submitted three briefs to the Government of Ontario:

1. Hiring Practices

On February 21, 2019, ETFO responded to the Ministry of Education’s Consultation on Hiring Practices and Regulation 274. In its submission (PDF | Word) ETFO supports maintaining Regulation 274 as it provides a clear, consistent and transparent hiring process for long-term occasional (LTO) and permanent teaching positions.

2. Class Size

On February 21, 2019, ETFO submitted this response (PDF | Word) to the Ministry of Education’s engagement on Class Size. ETFO urges the government not only to maintain hard caps on class size on Kindergarten to Grade 3 but to implement hard caps on class size on grades 4 to 8. ETFO also highlighted the importance of Full-Day Kindergarten and called on the government to ensure that every Kindergarten classroom be staffed with a teacher and a Designated Early Childhood Educator (DECE).

3. Bill 48

On February 25, 2019, ETFO President Sam Hammond presented a submission (PDF | Word) to the Legislature’s Standing Committee on Social Policy regarding Bill 48, Safe and Supportive Classrooms Act, 2019. Among several recommendations ETFO proposes amendments to Bill 48 in order to safeguard the self-regulation of the teaching profession and maintain the current composition of the Ontario College of Teachers (OCT) Council and committees.
