The story behind the Upper Canada Medal goes back 175 years. It was originally created by the Loyal and Patriotic Society of Upper Canada to recognize distinguished service and bravery for volunteer soldiers in the War of 1812. In a true spirit of community, these volunteers chose to smelt these medals into gold bullion. The resulting monies from the bullion were used to establish the original Toronto General Hospital.
