World Environment Day

June 5th annually

World Environment Day is the United Nations’ flagship day for promoting worldwide awareness and action for the environment. Over the years, it has grown to be the largest global platform for environmental public outreach and is celebrated by millions of people in more than 100 countries.

  • Explain what biodiversity is to students using the article What is biodiversity and why does it matter to us?
  • The world is facing a mass extinction of species. What role do humans play? What can we do? Take action to protect our species by saving the endangered species act.
  • Challenge students to answer the question, “What is the most serious environmental problem facing Earth today?” in a special Earth Day Webquest.
  • Virtually visit a unique environment whether a desert or coral reef, rainforest or polar region and make a list of what is threatening the biodiversity of each of these environments.
  • Make a jeopardy game to learn about the earth. Use 101 Amazing Earth Facts to help develop the game.
  • How big is your environmental footprint​? Have students look around their homes and come back with ideas for reducing their carbon footprint; ideas like turning off lights when leaving a room, not leaving the fridge open or letting the family car idle at home or at school.
  • Have students choose an endangered Canadian species to tell the class about.
  • Explore what forest, grassland, ocean, wetland and desert habitats in Canada need protection to save species from extinction and see how you can defend nature and take action to protect wildlife habitat in Canada​.
  • Encourage students to look out the window of their apartment building, go out into their backyard, or go for a walk in their neigbourhood to connect with nature. Have them take photos or draw pictures of what they see in the natural environment around them and play this scavenger hunt​.
