Importance of Specialist Teachers

Research Supports the Importance of Specialist Teachers and Teacher - Librarians in Elementary Schools

All elementary students should have access to the expertise provided by teacher-librarians and specialist teachers - teachers who have specialist training in music, drama, art, health and physical education, guidance, design and technology. Under the current provincial funding formula, the majority of Ontario schools don't have these specialist educators.

ETFO commissioned an extensive literature review of research that examines the contribution of specialist teachers to the quality of elementary education. The review, published in 2015, confirmed that "overall, the literature surrounding specialist teachers in a range of content areas appears to support the claim that specialist teachers can positively impact student achievement and contribute to student success at the elementary level."
