ETFO celebrates Child Care Worker and Early Childhood Educator Appreciation Day

October 24, 2024

On Child Care Worker and Early Childhood Educator Appreciation Day, the Elementary Teachers' Federation of Ontario (ETFO) stands with Ontarians to recognize the essential role child care workers and designated early childhood educators (DECEs) play in fostering our youngest learners’ growth, achievement, and well-being.

"In Kindergarten classrooms, DECEs shine as integral members of educator teams, bringing their early childhood development expertise and dedication to every interaction. Their caring approach not only supports the well-being of children, but also fosters their holistic development, laying the foundation for a positive start in school,” says ETFO President Karen Brown. “As key partners alongside teachers, DECEs play a vital role in every child's early education journey. Respect for early childhood educators is essential, and today—and every day—we celebrate and honour their valuable contributions.”

Kindergarten provides lasting benefits for children’s reading, writing, numeracy, self-regulation, and social skill development. This is, in large part, due to the play-based learning expertise and leadership of DECEs. ETFO remains a champion and advocate of the full-day Kindergarten program, which is universally accessible and provides an equitable start to school for every learner in the province.

ETFO represents approximately 83,500 members, including 80,000 public elementary teachers and occasional teachers, and 3,500 designated early childhood educators, education support personnel, and professional support personnel.
