October 04, 2024
TORONTO, ON—On October 5, as the world comes together to celebrate World Teachers' Day, the Elementary Teachers' Federation of Ontario (ETFO) recognizes teachers' unwavering commitment to inspiring and empowering students.
“Teachers and other educators are the heart of Ontario’s public education system. Every day, teachers go above and beyond to inspire, challenge, and support students towards brighter futures,” says ETFO President Karen Brown. Their dedication is the foundation of our high-quality education system, and their influence extends far beyond the classroom. As we honour their invaluable contributions and critical role in supporting future leaders, we also renew our commitment to ensuring that every teacher is supported, respected, and empowered to continue this vital work."
World Teachers’ Day is a time to acknowledge the invaluable work done by teachers daily in classrooms across the country. Teachers make a difference by engaging students and providing them with an equitable, high-quality education.
World Teachers’ Day, celebrated annually on October 5, commemorates the adoption of the 1966 ILO/UNESCO Recommendation concerning the Status of Teachers. It is jointly organized in partnership with UNICEF, the International Labour Organization, and Education International.
ETFO represents approximately 83,000 members, including public elementary teachers, occasional teachers, designated early childhood educators, education support personnel, and professional support personnel.
