Ford government’s short-sighted decision to close the Ontario Science Centre a disservice to students, educators

June 28, 2024

The Ford government’s short-sighted move to close the Ontario Science Centre underscores its blatant disregard for the educational needs of Ontario's students. This reckless decision is a disservice to students, workers, and families and to educators who rely on the world-class learning centre to enrich their teaching and inspire their students. The closure will also adversely affect the neighbouring communities of Flemington Park and Thorncliffe Park.

The Ontario Science Centre is a vital resource for educators, students, and families, offering a wealth of educational opportunities and hands-on experiences that inspire curiosity and foster a lifelong love of learning. Since 1969, the centre has played a crucial role in making science accessible and engaging, providing invaluable support to educators in enhancing the curriculum, inspiring students to explore and excel in science, technology, engineering, arts, and mathematics (STEAM) fields, and creating enriching family experiences that promote a deeper understanding of the world around us.

The Ford government has shown a pattern of undermining public education, and this latest decision is yet another example of its misguided priorities. Instead of investing in our children's futures and supporting institutions that enhance learning, this Conservative government has chosen to dismantle an essential part of our educational landscape.

We strongly urge the Ford government to reverse its decision and prioritize repairs to this historic site so that it can reopen safely. Students deserve access to world-class educational resources that foster their curiosity, creativity, and a passion for learning.
